Chairmans Report - Show 150

2008 was was another long wet summer, but the August Bank Holiday saw the sun shine down on us once more, turning it into a magnificent weekend!

All of the sections showed some remarkable exhibits and all should be congratulated for the effort shown by both exhibitors and organizers. James Doran's hard work was greatly appreciated in re-growing the livestock section this year after the foot and mouth outbreak.

John Ashmore's music tent has developed in size and popularity as indeed has the dog section which Roger and Jackie Cashen organize. I'm pleased to report that both of these attractions are growing each year. Egham Residents Association staged the ever popular Barn Dance on Saturday evening with over 150 attendees.

Brian Perry, previously of Proctor & Gamble, undertook the increasingly onerous task of health and safety and like many others quietly contributed to the smooth running of the show. My gratitude must go to the committee and many other volunteers who donated an enormous amount of time and energy into preparation and implementation, especially those in areas not always in the spotlight, such as car parking, PA, ground clearing etc: the event quite simply wouldn't happen without them.

The continued support of our sponsors, in particular, Runnymede Borough Council, Proctor & Gamble, Foxhills, Barclays Bank, Nevin & Wright, Royal Holloway, Runnymede Hotel, Total Print, alongside many others provides the funds necessary for our existence. My thanks go to Nick Wood-Dow and Jerry Brownlee for their liaison with these generous benefactors. Even with excellent attendances over the two days, it simply would not be possible to go on without this funding

An example of the support we receive was very evident in March. To mark the150th show HRH Prince Philip was to attend a dinner at The Runnymede Hotel. Unfortunately at the eleventh hour, due to illness, this was not possible. We were faced with the prospect of cancellation with a huge financial loss to the organization. Such is our support, not one person asked for a refund, and a highly enjoyable evening ensued. The Palace enabled us to reward our supporters and backers by offering us another chance to meet our patron at Windsor Castle giving me, and many others, the most memorable occasion in my long association with the show.

I will continue in my role as Entertainments Officer but have decided after much deliberation that this is to be my last year as Chairman of the Association. It is however, with regret that I have no choice but "to make way for someone older" as new, younger people on the committee are in short supply. A vital issue, that has to be addressed, to ensure the continuation of this important community event.

My thanks go to everyone who has provided me with guidance and support over the years
