Chairmans Report - Show 149

2007 was one of the wettest summers we’ve had for some time, but the August Bank Holiday saw the sun shine down on us, turning it into a glorious weekend!

My gratitude must go to the committee and many other volunteers who donated an enormous amount of time and energy into the preparation and implementation of the show. New help is always sought, and I was very pleased at the capture of Jerry Brownlee and Andrew York, who injected a fresh enthusiasm, and both are growing their involvement this year.

Thanks to Roger and Jackie Cashen a new section was added this year, a highly successful dog show took place on the Saturday and will now become an annual event just like the ever popular barn dance Egham Residents Association staged once again.

All of the sections showed some impressive exhibits and all should be congratulated for the effort shown by both exhibitors and organizers. Unfortunately due to another outbreak of foot and mouth, James Doran’s hard work was undone, as we were unable to show livestock this year. However his expertise was greatly appreciated in the aftermath of the show when due to some irresponsible and inaccurate press reports, he was called upon to deal with the media. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sympathy to the local farmers affected by the disease.

Many others quietly contributed to the smooth running of the show, health and safety, car parking, P.A., trade stands, and many more, marshalled by our show manager John Bonnett. The music tent which was expertly managed by John Ashmore received very good reviews.

Even with the excellent attendances over the two days it would not be possible to put on the event without the continued support of our sponsors. In particular Brian Perry of Proctor & Gamble, Runnymede Borough Council, Nevin & Wright, Royal Holloway, Kingsley Print & Design, Runnymede Hotel, alongside many others provide the funds necessary for our existence. My thanks go to Nick Wood-Dow for his liaison with these generous benefactors.

Finally the 2008 show already being planned is to be 150th which is an unbelievable achievement, and although the show has undergone many changes since its inception, I believe we still offer the local community a terrific day out. Long may it continue!
